Attending a military college is a big decision. It is important that you have gathered all of the facts and made the necessary preparations if you plan to attend a military institution.

Military Academies

There are two types of military institutions academies and colleges. Each branch of the military has an academy. These academies are very prestigious and competitive. FastWeb points out that attending these academies requires a commitment of 5 years of military service and 3 years of reserve military service after graduation. In exchange you will receive tuition, room and board, books and medical and dental coverage. Essentially, you will earn your degree at no monetary cost to you.

Military Colleges

Military colleges are different in that they don’t require a service commitment upon graduation. While you attend a military college, you are require to fulfill ROTC service hours. You will not receive a full tuition scholarship, but you can receive ROTC scholarships and other financial aid. A military college provides courses and degrees that are designed to prepare students for service in the military, but you don’t have to pursue a military career.

Unlike other colleges, you will have to pass a rigorous fitness test and gain a congressional nomination. Gray Matter, a military blog, suggests the academies also like to see students that have achieved leadership roles in an extracurricular organization and excelled in athletics.
