SAT or ACT: Which Test Should Your Student Take?

Both tests are accepted by every major US college. Neither is harder than the other — they reward different strengths. Choosing the right test is one of the most important early decisions in test prep.

Choose the SAT if your student:

  • Is stronger in math with extended time per question
  • Prefers a two-section structure (Reading/Writing and Math)
  • Tends to work more carefully than quickly

Choose the ACT if your student:

  • Works quickly and is comfortable with a faster pace
  • Has solid science reasoning skills or likes data interpretation
  • Prefers a four-section structure with more questions per section

Why and when should you take the PSAT?

The PSAT is separate from the SAT/ACT choice. It is taken earlier — typically in 10th or 11th grade — and serves two purposes: it is an early performance indicator, and high scores qualify students for National Merit recognition. PSAT preparation is worthwhile independent of which test your student ultimately takes.
