Visual learners often struggle with remembering lectures and translating heard information into memorized material. Visual learners can use specific study methods to transform heard information into visual information that is more easily recalled.
Color Code Notes
CollegeRaptor suggests color coding notes. As you take notes in your lectures or from your texts, use colored pens or pencils to categorize material. When you write in color your brain will be able to better remember the different topics and main points. A layer of visual involvement will engage your brain at a deeper level. In addition, you will have to engage with the material in a deeper way to develop a color code and determine what information should be in what color. The simple act of engaging with the material in this way will help you remember the information.
Doodle
As you take notes draw. Doodle images that coordinate with the material. This will keep your brain engaged during the lecture and the visual cues will help you as you study later. It doesn’t have to be a specific picture or image, any doodle will do.
Shape Your Notes
The actual visual presentation of your notes can help your brain engage with the material. Line after line of copy is bound to blur together and won’t stimulate you to interact with the material. Instead make mind maps. Mind maps are a series of topics spread out across the page. They can be connected to other concepts with lines and circles. Each concept can be expanded with additional words if necessary. If a mind map appears too messy for your taste, consider an outline format. The shape and flow of an outline will appeal to a visual learner, but often stays neater and more organized.
Available Resources
If you are a visual learner, you will need to find ways to synthesize material that is visual. Charts, graphs, pictures, and diagrams are all helpful. Luckily many of these resources are readily available. Do an image search of the topics that you are studying and see if you can use what you find to help you memorize material. Be sure you are incorporating plenty of color and and shape into your study and notes and you will have an easier time recalling information.
