Preparation for the SATs begins long before the date of the exam. Preparation also includes more than just studying. It includes managing stress, building capacity for focus and concentration, and multiple practice exams. While your child prepares, it is important to keep them on track, both mentally and physically, so that they can preform their best the day of the exam.

Encouragement

Performing well on the SAT can have as much to do with your child’s mental state as it does with their preparation. Help your child feel confident and ready by offering a steady stream of encouragement. Comment on how hard they are working. Tell them that you notice they seem very prepared. Offer positive phrases about how you have confidence in their abilities. Your encouraging words will help them remain positive and believe that they can do well on the exam. Confidence on exam day can knock out test day anxiety and help your child do their best.

Physical Health

If your child is excellent at studying, they may be sacrificing time for other important activities. Eating, sleeping, and exercising are all essential to good physical health. Endless hours of studying will be wasted on exam day if your child doesn’t feel well. Prepare healthy meals and keep healthy snacks around the house so that your child won’t be tempted by fast, junk food. Fruits and veggies, nuts and greens, are all great, brain power foods. Encourage your child to go for walks, play frisbee with friends, or participate in their favorite sport outside. Fresh air and brisk movement can help the brain stay focused and even improve memory. It will also stave off stress. Sleep is so important to staying alert and focused. Help your child prioritize their time so that they can get enough sleep at night.

Focus and Concentration

The SAT requires mental stamina. Help your child develop their ability to focus and concentrate by providing an appropriate environment. Turn off the tv. Ask them if they would like you to hold on to their phone. Have a quiet space without too much hustle and bustle around. Sit down and read or work on a hobby while your child studies, so that it will be quiet, but they won’t feel alone. The right study space can help your chid develop essential skills for focusing.

An Active Role

Take an active role in your child’s SAT prep. It can be very overwhelming to study for such a significant exam. Knowing that they have a team can make all the difference in a child’s stress level and initiative. Help your child stay healthy both mentally and physically, so that they are ready to do their best on the day of the exam.
