Studying for a test can be overwhelming and stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. These hacks can help you study productively, making the most of your time.

  • Study Before You Sleep

Study right before you go to sleep. Scientists are still unsure exactly what happens in the brain while you sleep, but they are beginning to have a better understanding. Lifehacker sites a study that found subjects asked to memorize word pairs were more likely to remember them if they learned them in the evening, before going to sleep. If you study before going to bed, it may help you recall what you studied the next day.

  • Review Your Notes Everyday

Looking over your notes on the same day you wrote them down can help cement new information in your brain. Studies sited by NEMJ Knowledge+ show that short bits of studying over time is more useful than a marathon study session. A quick review every night will save you time in the long run and prepare you for future exams.

  • Chew Gum

A flavor or scent associated with certain material may help you recall it later. Try chewing mint gum when you study for a math exam, bubble gum for chemistry, and fruit for language arts. Then chew the coordinating gum while you take the exam, it just might jog your memory. It can work the same way for a lotion or oil scent.

  • Go For A Walk

A few minutes of brisk exercise can get your brain energized and ready for studying. Increased circulation pumps oxygen to the brain, waking it up and making it easier to focus and concentrate. If you are feeling tired or lethargic, get some fresh air and get your blood pumping.

  • Study Near a Window

Studies sited by Forbes have found that even just looking at nature or having green present can improve productivity. Don’t lock yourself away with no windows. Sit near a window so that you can stare out it every now and then. Your brain will appreciate the break.

  • There is No Substitute for Time

No matter what hacks you use for studying, performing well in academics takes time and effort. Nothing substitutes taking time to study and really engaging with the material. Some subjects you will enjoy more than others, but you will need to press yourself to invest in all of your coursework.
