No matter how brilliant your child is, there is one thing that could get between them and an excellent score on exam day: anxiety. In spite of weeks of preparation, anxiety can bubble up and kill confidence on exam day. The stress of such a major challenge can impact even the smartest and brightest student. However, your child can ward off stress and anxiety so that they don’t get in the way of an excellent exam score.

Routine

Instead of the exam being a singular event, where everything is on the line, change it into a routine. At Mr. Test Prep we offer free practice exams that are administered just like the real thing. Taking these exams, makes the real thing feel more ordinary and practiced, rather than intimidating. Knowing just exactly what the test will be like, takes fear and anxiety out of the equation. “It’s another test, like the ones I’ve done before,” becomes the mindset.

Managing Stress

Give your child tools to manage stress and anxiety when it begins to take over. Help them practice these tools before the exam so that they can quickly pull them out when they need them. Negative self talk starts to take over when feeling anxious. Give your child positive mantras they can use to block out negative thoughts. “I’ve got this” or “I know” are simple and easy to employ when fear starts to infringe on focus. Deep breathing can also help relax and focus the mind. When stress and anxiety are threatening, take long deep breaths to recenter your focus. Practicing deep breathing daily will make it feel normal and comfortable when you need it during the exam.

Practiced Confidence

Confidence can be one to the keys to performing well on the exam, but confidence is not built in a day. One encouraging statement on the day of the exam is not likely to stick. When you offer positive encouragement daily, your child will intuitively know they are capable of performing well. When they have practiced confidence there won’t be any room for doubt about their abilities.

Prepare

You can play a significant role in giving your child tools to beat stress and anxiety. Remember that testing is about more than recalling knowledge, it takes physical and metal stamina. Preparing for all aspects of the test ahead of time will help your child reach their goals.
