Our ability, or lack there of, to focus and concentrate can be dependent on a variety of factors. Our physical wellness can impact our focus and concentration. However, focus and concentration can also be learned skills. Here are four ways to improve focus and concentration.

1) Drink Water

Our bodies require a significant amount of water to function properly everyday. An important organ that can be impacted by lack of water is our brain. An article by BeBrainFit states, “Even mild dehydration results in shrinkage of brain tissue and temporary loss of cognitive function, including concentration and memory.”  Try to reduce the amount of sugary drinks and sodas you drink everyday and replace them with water. Not only this will ensure your brain is getting the water it needs to concentrate, but it also eliminates sugar highs and lows that are tough on your body and your mind.

2) Eat Chocolate

We may crave chocolate because it is good for our body. An article from Harvard Health cites studies that found the flavanols in chocolate can improve thinking and cognitive function. Dark chocolate has the highest concentration of flavanols. Treat yourself to a small bit of dark chocolate everyday. Don’t go overboard. Most chocolate products also contain plenty of sugar and calories along with their chocolate.

3) Meditate

Meditation is the practice of focusing the mind and eliminating distraction. Your goal may be to either focus on a specific mantra or clear the mind entirely. The practice of eliminating distraction can help you focus on the task at hand. It also relieves stress and anxiety that can act as their own distraction. Meditating takes practice, so for the best results your should devote at least few minutes every day to meditation.

4) Yoga

Yoga is the practice of using specific positions and holds to stretch muscles and improve flexibility. In addition, yoga focuses on breathing. Yoga encourages you to think about your breathing as you hold each position. Yoga can improve your concentration, increase oxygen to the brain and encourage the practice of focused breathing, all of which will enhance your ability to focus in any situation. Start attending a yoga class you like or find a yoga video you feel comfortable with.

Concentration and focus are essential to taking exams such as the SAT and ACT. They are also essential to accomplishing everyday tasks throughout life. These four methods are simple. Incorporate them into your everyday routine for life-long improved focus and concentration.
