[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Santa Clara SAT PrepGiftedness can be hard to identify. It covers a broad range of categories and expresses itself differently in

every child. There is no standard procedure for identifying gifted students. Each school district develops

their own method for selecting gifted students for special services. If you feel like your child is not being

challenged and would benefit from gifted services, there are a few ways you can evaluate whether or not

they are gifted.

Language Skills

Often children who are gifted will display giftedness in their language skills. Their reading and

comprehension skills will develop easily. They may display a special interest in reading or writing. Other

students are more gifted in areas of math and spatial reasoning.

Because of advanced language skills, gifted kids may find themselves relating to older kids and adults

better than their peers. If your child seems to gravitate to the adults in the room, they may be gifted.

Social Emotional Skills

According to an article from Psychology Today, gifted children are often misdiagnosed with Attention

Deficit or Hyperactivity Disorders. This can be for two reasons, the first is that gifted children can often be

easily excited and will talk faster or become hyper when working when engaged with things that intrigue

them. They can also be more energetic than other kids. Gifted kids may have a hard time performing well

in school because the subject matter doesn’t interest them or they don’t want to spend time on what they

feel are tedious tasks.

Breaking the Mold

A gifted child doesn’t always fit the star student mold. They may be prone to stress, not fit in socially, and

shun school work. When gifted children struggle in school they are often overlooked. You need to use

your instincts to determine when the school may not be meeting your students needs. You can pursue

private testing and evaluation to determine whether or not your child is gifted when you are not satisfied

with the school’s determination.

It can be challenge to offer gifted students the support and encouragement they need to perform at their

highest potential. Knowing your student is gifted can help you celebrate the joys and tackle the

challenges associated with giftedness.
