you choose a major that interests you and offers career opportunities. When you are interested in your

administration, liberal arts, nursing, psychology, and general studies. Other popular degrees include
education, communications, finance, marketing and computer science.
These five degrees may be that most popular because they cover a variety of topics and offer a very
broad range in career choices. While one of these five areas of study may be perfect for you, just
because they are popular doesn’t mean are the right fit.
Find the Right Fit
As you prepare to go to college think about your natural abilities and interests. Then do some research
and find out what career opportunities may exists for your particular interests. You may be surprised to
find careers that you have never heard of or considered before. After you have developed a few career
ideas, find out what qualifications and education they require and choose a major accordingly.
Consider Your Criteria
Some things to keep in mind as you choose a major are competitiveness of the job market, keeping in
mind how many jobs are available and how many people are pursuing those jobs; average salaries in the
field; and opportunity for advancement or professional growth.
It is also important to consider how much weight you want to give to each criteria. If you absolutely know
you want to be an educator, average salaries may not matter to you. Or, you may not love engineering,
but you are good at math and science and the availability of jobs and high starting salaries are very
enticing.
Discovering Your Career Path

majors throughout the United States, a wide variety of academic programs are available. Take the time to
