The ACT can be overwhelming for the whole family. You may sense the stress and pressure your child is feeling. While studying and preparation is up to them, there are a few ways you can help your child succeed.
Offer Support Without Pressure
You child is likely feeling plenty of pressure regarding the ACT. Ask how they are doing, or what you can do to help. Don’t demand specific scores. Let your child know that you are there for them regardless of how they perform on the exam.
Help Set Boundaries
Many students have trouble setting boundaries and adhering to priorities. Some students will study all of the time neglecting other healthy habits such as eating and sleeping. Other students will put off studies and waste time in various ways. Help your child develop healthy habits that will set boundaries for appropriate amounts of study. Help them set up a study schedule that will leave time for rest, exercise and friends so they can stay healthy physically and emotionally.
Help your child celebrate. When they have a achieved a certain goal such as a practice test score or number of hours of study, celebrate with them. Keep it simple such as going out for coffee or to a movie. You could even write a note that says you noticed how hard they worked.
Study with Them
Sometimes studying can feel lonely. Students may feel like they have to be removed from the rest of their family. Sit down at the table and quietly read a book or magazine while they study, so they don’t feel alone. Avoid distracting activities such as watching tv, listening to music or talking on the phone. The simple act of quietly being with your child will show solidarity.
Keep healthy food in the house that powers your child’s brain. Blueberries, avocados, and leafy greens are excellent brain foods. Help your child feel well and have better cognitive function when you help them eat well and avoid having junk foods in the house.
Your child must show initiative and work hard to excel on the ACT. However, you can be excellent support staff. Just showing you care and are there for you child can go a long way in improving their confidence and helping them succeed.
