Procrastination may feel like it is saving you time, but ultimately, it is costing you. Procrastination requires that you have to work harder to learn, it may result in grades that are lower that your potential, and you may experience higher levels of stress.

Over Learning

StudyRight points out that procrastination often results in a phenomenon called over learning. Over learning is what happens when you have to learn material again and again because you didn’t internalize it the first time. Cramming to memorize information the night before the test might help you pass the test. However, due to the way memory works, you are likely to forget the information in about a week. You will have to relearn the material the next time you encounter it instead of building on what you already know. Over the course of your education, this continued practice of procrastination will cost you time.

Lower Grades

A survey performed by Knewton found that students who procrastinate receive lower marks on their assignments than students who don’t. The study discovered that students who started their assignments less than three days before the due date received about three points lower on their grade than the class average. Three points may not seem like much, but throughout a semester, receiving lower grades than your potential on every assignment could significantly hurt your overall grade.

Stress

Procrastinating can raise your level of stress. When you have anxiety over whether or not you will be able to complete the assignment on time or learn information for an exam in a short amount of time, your stress level will raise significantly. Procrastination also often results in a lack of sleep. Staying up all night to get something done can raise your level of stress and affect your performance throughout the following day and even weeks. Procrastination can start a cycle of stress that is hard to break. It is easier to plan your time appropriately and stay on top of your work.

A Costly Habit

Procrastination can be a costly habit. Learn how to manage your time so that you can perform at your highest potential. You may enjoy your work more, get higher scores and more rest. In the long run, you will be more productive when you don’t procrastinate.
