How To Build Your Child’s Test Taking Confidence

When your child is facing an important exam it can be difficult to watch them struggle under the pressure and stress of the looming exam. There is good news! You don’t have to sit back and watch. There are many actions you can take to boost your student’s test taking confidence.

A student that is confident about the exam they are taking will perform better on the exam. As a parent, you have a significant role in helping your student prepare mentally for the big test.

Relieve Pressure

The first thing you can do is relieve some of the pressure. Students who are preparing for the SAT may already feel like their whole future is riding on this exam. They also may have anxiety about disappointing their family or not performing as well as their friends. Remind your child that you are proud of them and you know they have worked hard. Assure your child that regardless of how they perform on the exam you will still love and respect them and be proud of how hard they worked to prepare.

When your child doesn’t feel like they need to win your approval with an exam score, some of the anxiety they felt facing the test can be relieved. This will help them focus on studying and not feel so much pressure on the day of the exam.

Point Out Success

Students may also have a hard time remembering the areas where they have succeeded in the past. Maybe past failures loom heavy in their mind as they thinking about taking the exam. Instead of pointing out their weaknesses and previous failures, help your students remember when they have succeeded. Help them remember that there are times when they have performed well and they have the ability to do it again. Reminding your student that they are capable of success rather than likely doomed to failure will help boost their confidence significantly.

Teach Problem Solving Skills

Encourage problem-solving skills. Tests are about more than just the knowledge of material. Tests require critical thinking and problem solving skills. You can encourage these skills in everyday life. It may be tempting to want to solve all of your student’s problems, but giving them space to make their own decisions and work out their own problems will help boost their problem solving skills. You can even share problems you are facing and ask for their input.

Encourage Study Habits

Promote good study habits. If your child isn’t sure where to begin when studying for the SAT, work with them to set up an appropriate study plan. Offer ample opportunities to take practice exams. Check in with your child regularly to make sure they are keeping up with the plan. You may have to restructure some family time so that your student has adequate time to prepare. You may also need to help them prioritize their time so they are dividing it appropriately between school work, SAT prep and extracurriculars. A student that is prepared will feel more confident on exam day.

Offer Encouraging Words

The absolute best thing you can do to boost your student’s confidence is to tell them they are smart and capable. We Are Teachers suggests that you remind your child that they have what it takes to perform well on the test. You may even want to give them encouraging notes or messages during the days leading up to the exam. When your child believes they are a good test-taker they will be.

Don’t sit back and watch your child struggle with the stress and anxiety that comes with taking an exam. Take an active role in giving your students the tools they need to feel confident about a major exam. You can relieve pressure, remind your students of their history of success, instill problem-solving skills, give them appropriate study skills and tell them they are great test-takers!
