Everyone knows the saying “you are what you eat,” but did you ever consider that what you eat actually

does affect your brain?

Your study time will be more productive when you power your brain with foods

that enhance your memory and your focus. These foods will boost your brain power and improve your

studying.

Complex Carbohydrates

Carbs give you the energy you need to focus for long periods of time. WebMD suggests eating a whole

grain snack to keep your energy levels high. However, not any carb will work. Avoid sugars found in

candy and large portions found in pasta. These snacks will cause your blood sugar to spike and leave

you feeling sleepy after a short burst of energy. Choose a whole grain piece of toast or bowl of whole

grain cereal instead.

Omega-3 Fatty Acid

According to Eating Well, Omega-3 fatty acids are associated with better mood and concentration and are

important for brain development, all of which are significant for performing well on an exam. These fatty

acids are most commonly found in cold water fish like salmon and trout, but they can also be found in

nuts, eggs, and even fortified granola bars.

Iron

Iron can affect memory and attention. If you are having a difficult time staying focused or even awake

while you study, you may want to increase your iron intake. Foods high in iron include beef, beans, kale,

and spinach.

Water

Drinking water may seem too simple, but many people forget to drink enough water during the day.

Staying well hydrated will help you remain focused and alert and increase oxygen to the brain. When you

are feeling hungry or distracted while trying to study, start by drinking a cup of water before you snack on

other foods or sugary drinks.

Take Care of Your Brain

Eating well will help you think well. A well rounded diet will keep you physically and mentally healthy,

which will improve your studying. Start your study time with a healthy snack or meal and save sugary

treats or oily junk food for a reward when you are done studying. Then you will have the energy you need

to learn and retain new information, which will ultimately help you perform well on the SAT.
