Everyone wants to do well on the SATs, unfortunately there are some major mistakes people make in the days approaching the exam that can have a negative impact on their score. Use these simple tips to avoid those mistakes and do your best on the exam.

Sleep Well

Don’t stay up all night studying before the exam. Your brain needs sleep to function at its best. The length of the SATs requires extended focus and concentration. Losing sleep will make it very difficult to stay focused on the test. Do something to relax, like drink a cup of herbal tea or listen to some quiet music before you go to bed so that you can drift easily off to sleep. You will wake up well rested, alert, and focused on the day of the exam.

Take Practice Tests

The only way to prepare for the types of questions being asked and the pressure that time adds to a test is to take practice tests. Make sure that you take timed practice tests that include all of the sections so that you can develop the stamina and pacing you need to complete the exam.

Prepare

You have to put time and energy into improving your trouble spots. This may mean practicing grammar rules, or working out a particular equation over and over again. After you take practice tests, evaluate your mistakes and use them to guide your study. Put in small bits of time on a regular basis leading up to the exam so that you won’t be tempted to stay awake and cram the night before the test.

Stay Calm

Anxiety can strike anyone during such an important exam. Don’t let it ruin your score. Practice deep breathing and positive self-talk so that you can calm yourself when you think you are becoming too anxious to focus.

Make Your Study Plan

These simple tips for SAT success take planning and intention. Start developing an SAT prep plan that includes timed practice tests, focused study, adequate sleep, and tools for combating stress and anxiety.
