Why Reading Every Day Is Good For Intelligence And For Life

Reading everyday is an excellent way to prepare for the SAT. Not only is it a habit that is good for the SAT but also it can improve your intelligence and life in general.

Reading Comprehension

Reading for the SAT can improve your reading comprehension skills. It can also equip you with knowledge and examples to use in the essay section of the test. Statistics have shown that students who write longer essays typically score better. When you have more material to recall and reference in your essays you are likely to get a higher score.

It is important to be well rounded in your reading. Newspapers, magazines, such as Time or National Geographic, and other nonfiction works like biographies are good to include in your regular reading repertoire. It is also important to read classic literature and even current popular fiction novels. Don’t be afraid to choose books you will enjoy, as well as books you think you should read.

Improving Intelligence

Not only is reading a great way to be prepared for the SAT, but it can also improve your overall intelligence.

According to a study cited by Psychology Today, students who read fiction showed increased connectivity in parts of the brain that are associated with language comprehension and parts of the brain associated with movement. This suggests that your brain may place you in the story. Psychology Today suggests that reading fiction can improve empathy and understanding of other people’s beliefs and desires.

Emotional Intelligence

Reading, whether it is fiction or nonfiction can open your eyes to the world and give you a better understanding of other people’s experience and emotion. This can improve your emotional intelligence, which some have argued is an even better indicator of success in life than IQ. Emotional intelligence is what helps you recognize your own emotions and respond to them appropriately, as well as recognize emotions in others. People with strong emotional intelligence are excellent at resolving conflict and are often wise leaders.

Relieving Stress

In addition to improving intelligence, reading can be a good way to relax. An article from Huffington Post cites research that found people relax in a short six minutes after starting to read. The study found reading better at relieving stress than taking a walk or drinking a cup of tea. This can be especially helpful when you are surrounded by the everyday stresses of schoolwork, test prep, and other extracurricular activities.

Improving Concentration

Reading slowly, without distractions, can also help you concentrate. There are few moments in our lives when we are really required to focus on something. Being constantly distracted can make it difficult to focus and concentrate when we need to.

According to Wall Street Journal when we set aside time to just read we can improve our ability to concentrate. Concentration is an essential component of taking the SAT. You must be able to focus for a long period of time without getting distracted. This skill will also improve your productivity throughout life, whether at work or in the home. Being able to focus on and accomplish a single task without distraction or while managing distraction is essential to performing well in the work place.

A Lifelong Habit

Reading is an excellent habit to take with you in life. The sooner you get started and the more you read, the more likely you are to carry that habit into adulthood. Reading will help you perform well on the SAT, but it will also help you in life. It will give you a broader view of the world. Reading can connect you with times, places, and ideas you would otherwise never experience. Reading can also make you more empathetic and emotionally intelligent. This habit will reduce stress and help you focus.

As you read, choose a broad variety of material. Pick novels you enjoy, but don’t forget to include nonfiction, current events and classics in your repertoire. Set aside quiet, uninterrupted time to read everyday, even if it’s just a few minutes before you go to sleep. What is your plan to have time for reading? What is your favorite reading material to delve into?
