The Best Foods To Prepare Your Mind For Test Taking

In addition to studying and preparation, a healthy body and a healthy brain will help a student perform better on the SAT. Diet can go a long way toward improving brain function and reducing stress. Here are some tips for eating well so that you can perform your best.

Salmon

WebMD suggests that deep-water fish, like salmon, are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are essential for the brain and are also a natural anti-inflammatory. This means salmon can help your brain function better, as well as help your body feel its best. WebMD suggests a four ounce serving two or three times a week.

Avocados

Avocados are a fatty fruit that promote healthy blood flow, according to WebMD. Healthy blood flow will result in more oxygen to the brain, which encourages healthy brain function. Avocados can also lead to lower blood pressure, which may help you feel less stressed. They are also very high in calories, so they are an easy way to store up a lot of energy. Add some sliced avocados to your salad or sandwich at least once a day.

Whole Grains

BBC’s GoodFood points out that choosing whole grains can help you metabolize sugar and prevent sugar highs. Sugar highs can cause you to loose focus when you are feeling high and make it difficult to stay awake and attentive when you come down. When you are preparing for a test you want to eat foods that will give you energy and focus over the long haul. Eat whole grains such as oatmeal, 100% whole grain bread, whole grain pastas, and wheat bran to maintain consistent energy levels all day long.

Protein

In addition to choosing whole grains, adding protein to your snacks will help you metabolize sugar and give you healthy energy all day long. You should have several snacks throughout the day and they should include a serving of carbohydrates as well as a serving of protein. Some examples of excellent, high-energy snacks include cheese and crackers, yogurt and fruit or nut butter spread on whole grain bread.

Pumpkin Seeds

BBC’s GoodFoods suggests eating a handful of pumpkin seeds everyday. They contain the recommended daily amount of zinc which is known for improving memory and thinking skills. Zinc is also known for fighting illness, such as colds, helping you feel healthier when the day of the test comes around.

Coffee and Tea

Coffee and Tea both contain caffeine, which can help you stay alert and focused. Huffington Post points out that coffee is full of antioxidants, which fight off free radical damage in the brain. Ultimately, protecting brain health and brain function. Tea has a milder amount of caffeine, but a similar amount of antioxidants. Don’t go overboard with caffeine. Those who are sensitive to it may experience headaches or loss of sleep, which will make you feel stressed rather than focused. You may want to limit your coffee and tea intake to one or two cups first thing in the morning.

Water

Water is essential to our daily health. Psychology Today claims that brain cells require water for optimal function and dehydration can result in impaired short-term memory and impaired ability to recall long-term memories. Memory is necessary for test taking. The SAT will require you to recall information you have learned over the course of years of education. You want your memory to function optimally. Make sure you start drinking water first thing in the morning and continue throughout the day.

The Long Haul

No single food or diet regimen will ensure a high score on test day. However, there are foods you can eat to ensure that your brain is functioning at its best, your body feels well and you are not feeling too stressed. Eating one or two of these foods the day before the test will probably not make a significant difference. Instead, incorporate these healthy foods into your dieting habits in the months or even years leading up to the big test. Not only will these healthy eating habits set you up for performing well on the SAT, but also they will be helpful for protecting brain function and feeling well throughout your life. A healthy diet and healthy study habits can help you perform your best on the SAT.
