The SAT evokes all kinds of emotions. Approaching test day you may feel nervous, anxious, stress, calm, confidence, and a whole host of other emotions. Once you get your exam scores back, you will feel another rollercoaster of emotions, joy, excitement, anticipation, disappointment, sadness, anger, confusion, and more. It is ok to feel all kinds of emotions when you are dealing with something as significant as college entrance exams. It is what you do with the emotions that can make a difference.

Exam Day Jitters

As exam day nears, it is ok to feel jitters. You may feel stress and anxiety, but you don’t want those emotions to take over during the exam. They could inhibit your ability to perform at your best. To fight these emotions practice positive self talk and mindful meditation. Being able to focus and concentrate in the midst of anxiety and stress is a skill that you can practice and hone. You can also boost your confidence through studying and practice.

Scores

Once you receive your scores, there are a variety of reactions you can have. If you achieved your goal score, you may feel relief and excitement. When your score is less than you expected, confusion, sadness, or even anger may be the dominant emotions. Don’t let these emotions take over. The score is just a score, and it doesn’t have to dictate your future. Get started on making a plan to prepare for the next time you will take the SAT. Use the energy of your emotions to help propel you into working for improvements.

The Help You Need

Riding the waves of anxiety and relief over and over again can be exhausting. You may find that you don’t know how to process your emotions or that there are certain emotions you can’t let go. Stress or anxiety may feel like they are lurking at every corner. Don’t be afraid to get help. It is important to get test prep study help, but also help for your mental health. Talk to a trusted adult about how you are feeling. You can seek out a school counselor, trusted teacher, and even your parents to help you walk through this emotionally trying time.

Maintaining emotional health will help you continue to perform well in school, make good choices about your future, and feel confident and well. Don’t neglect this important aspect of your life.
