Attending a military college is a big decision. It is important that you have gathered all of the facts and made the necessary preparations if you plan to attend a military institution.
There are two types of military institutions academies and colleges. Each branch of the military has an academy. These academies are very prestigious and competitive. FastWeb points out that attending these academies requires a commitment of 5 years of military service and 3 years of reserve military service after graduation. In exchange you will receive tuition, room and board, books and medical and dental coverage. Essentially, you will earn your degree at no monetary cost to you.
Military colleges are different in that they don’t require a service commitment upon graduation. While you attend a military college, you are require to fulfill ROTC service hours. You will not receive a full tuition scholarship, but you can receive ROTC scholarships and other financial aid. A military college provides courses and degrees that are designed to prepare students for service in the military, but you don’t have to pursue a military career.
Like many competitive colleges, to gain admissions into an academy you must have an excellent GPA and high SAT or ACT. Unlike other colleges, you will have to pass a rigorous fitness test and gain a congressional nomination. Gray Matter, a military blog, suggests the academies also like to see students that have achieved leadership roles in an extracurricular organization and excelled in athletics.
Each of the academies offer a summer program to high school students. These summer programs can help you have a better understanding of what it will be like to attend a military academy. It will also help you stand out as an applicant who is serious about their decision to attend a military academy.

You will take part in physical training and military training in addition to your classes. Your summers will be committed to basic training. You should talk with counselors and recruiters well in advance to understand whether a military academy is the best choice for you.
