How Students Can Prepare For The Increased Workload At College

Life changes dramatically when you start college. You are no longer under the watchful eyes of your parents, and suddenly you have what seems like so much freedom. But at college, your workload increases dramatically. Check out these 5 easy ways you can prepare now for this huge, and important, transition.

Read For Fun

Simple as it sounds, CollegeOnline suggests reading to prepare for college. Reading for its own sake—above and beyond what your courses in high school require—offers incalculable advantages. For starters, it will help expand your vocabulary and improve your reading comprehension, both of which you need to perform well on the SAT or ACT. Finding time to read will help you develop the time management skills necessary to excel scholastically while maintaining a healthy balance in life. Spending time reading will also cultivate your ability to concentrate for extended periods, a skill that all college courses demand.

Take Advanced Courses

Taking advanced classes will give you a taste for what college courses will require. AP or IB credit sometimes even allows you to test out of college prerequisites, so you’ll have more time to explore courses that interest you.

Practice Good Study Habits

Since your high school workload is lighter than what you’ll face in college, high school is the perfect time to develop good study habits. That way, when you arrive at college, you won’t struggle to figure out how to succeed in classes—you’ll already know. Good study skills include, setting aside a specific time and place for studying; setting small goals and using rewards systems as you accomplish them; and developing effective methods for internalizing information.

Know When to Get Help

Universities offer all kinds of resources, but many new college students don’t even know about them. You can visit a professor in office hours, take your papers to the writing center, or find tutoring. But if you’re going to be comfortable asking for help when you really need it, you’ll have to get into the habit. Start now by talking with your teachers when you are having trouble. Engaging in class discussions and not being afraid to stand out will prepare you to make the best of your college courses.

Prepare to Excel

With a little preparation you can excel in college. Work now to develop stellar study habits that will help you succeed as you move on to higher education.
