How To Find “The Zone” When You’re Taking SAT or ACT Tests & Exams

Athletes are familiar with the zone. The zone is that special place your mind goes where nothing else is there but the game or the race. Everything clicks into place and your performance is amazing. The zone

isn’t something that just magically happens. Athletes do a lot of preparation so that they can get into the

zone when they need it.

As you are preparing for exams you can practice so that the zone comes naturally on the day of the test.

Here are a few tools that can help you find the zone.

Visualization

Athletes often spend time visualizing the upcoming game or race. According to the New York Times

visualization or imagery is an essential part of olympic athletes’ preparation. Athletes prepare their mind

by picturing the game winning shot, the perfect race, or a blocked goal. They also picture the setting;

what the course will be like and even what the crowd might sound like. You can do the same for an exam

by picturing the setting and imagining that you are calm and focused while taking the test. You can

visualize the exam and even the score that you want to achieve.

Positive Self Talk

Don’t let negative thoughts enter your mind. Tell yourself phrases like “I can do this”, “I am good at math”,

or “I have plenty of time.” The more often you practice telling yourself positive messages as you prepare

for the exam, the easier it will be to stay positive on the day of the exam. Eliminating negative thoughts

will prevent panic while you are taking the test.

Practice

When you watch a gymnast nail their floor routine or a basketball player shoot the game winning three

pointer, it often looks natural and easy. What you don’t see are the hours and hours of practice, year after

year that made them ready for those moments. You can practice for an exam as well. Take practice tests

and try to simulate the conditions of the exam so that you are prepared on the day of the test. The more

familiar you are with the test is the less likely you are to feel anxious or scared. The zone will come

naturally when you have spent time practicing.

Get Into the Zone

Prepare for your upcoming SAT or ACT by knowing how to get into the zone. The more often you practice

the psychological tools you need to get in the zone, the more naturally the zone will come on exam day.

Visualizing, thinking positively and most importantly practice will help you get into the zone and perform

well on exam day.
