When your teen needs help and you have decided to hire a tutor, take the time to find the right person for the job. Here are five things to look for when hiring so that your student will be successful after working
with their tutor.
The tutor you hire should be someone who connects well with your teen. Your teen should feel relaxed yet challenged when working with their tutor. They should not feel pressured, badgered or nagged by their tutor. They should have respect for their tutor and feel respected by their tutor. Your student will excel when they work well with their tutor.
Some tutors may specialize in specific areas. Find an expert in a subject such as math or reading or find someone who has a knack for teaching new study methods or time management skills. Other tutors may be able to help your student develop test taking skills or master writing. Be sure the tutor you hire can teach the concepts you expect your student to learn.
An experienced tutor will have a vast collection of knowledge and methods to draw from to help your teen. When a tutor has experience working with teens it will be easier for them to help your student excel.
Tutors must be excellent communicators. They need to clearly and efficiently communicate skills and concepts to your student. They also need to be comfortable communicating with you as a parent. A tutor needs to keep you updated on the progress your student is making and how they are helping your student achieve their goals. They should also feel comfortable raising any concerns they may have as they work with your teen.
A tutor should have solid references. You want to know that your tutor is trustworthy and that they have seen successful results in the past. Take time to talk with references so that you can know whether or not a particular tutor will be the right fit for your family. Hiring a tutor can change the trajectory of your teen’s performance in high school. Take the time to find the tutor that is the perfect fit for your teen and your family.
