5 Amazing Test Taking Strategies For University

Taking tests in college can be intimidating. Some courses base their entire grade on only two exams. Having strategies in place to tackle your tests in college will help you feel confident. Try these five strategies so that you can do your best on your exams.

1) Arrive Early

You never want to start a test feeling flustered. Flying in at the last moment, as the tests are being handed out, is a sure way to send your stress levels through the roof. Instead, arrive a few minutes early so that you can sit back and take a few deep breaths. You may want to grab a quick power snack or drink some water so that you feel comfortable and energized for the exam.

2) Read The Questions

When you feel rushed or even just nervous it can be easy to overlook or misread instructions. Read all of the instructions and questions thoroughly. Be sure to look for words like “always,” “never,” and “all” or “none.” These words can be the key to selecting the correct answer. Don’t skim over questions because you may miss very important details that won’t jump out at you.

3) Always Answer

Very rarely do college exams penalize for a wrong answer. When you cannot come up with an answer, make an informed guess. If you are doing a math problem show your work, you may get partial credit. For short answer questions write to the best of your ability. You will always get points off for a blank answer, but it is possible to get some points if you put down something.

4) Use Proper Grammar

Many college exams are given in a short answers or essay question format. It may be tempting to rush through these, writing down only the important information. However, your instructors will be looking for proper grammar and logical construction. Make sure that you write in complete sentences. Support your ideas with facts and write in a concise and clear manner. If you have time, go back and proofread so that you can fix any errors.

5) Answer High Point Value Questions First

Some exams may give greater weight to specific questions. These questions might demand a bit more time than others. If the test identifies questions that have greater point values, answer those questions first. You don’t want to miss out on a lot of points, just because you ran out of time. It will be ok to miss one our two single point value questions, but it can be devastating to miss something worth ten points.

Use these strategies to show your professors that you know your material. Don’t be intimidated by your exams. When you have studied and feel prepared, you can achieve your goals.
